Apple Varieties
Listed below are all the apple varieties that we grow at Perry Lowe Orchards. Please refer back to this page for definite picking and available dates for our apples or call or email us with any questions.

There are a few varieties that we grow still to be listed but most of them are here for your information.
Cameo Cameo has a sweet-tart flavor and firm texture. It has a red stripe over a creamy colored background. It is a crisp and juicy apple that is excellent cooking and eating fresh. Fuji lovers will enjoy this apple.
Empire Empire is a cross between McIntosh and Red Delicious and takes on the best characteristics of both. It is redder and firmer than McIntosh and has a longer storage life. It is crisp with a white juicy flesh. It combine the mild tartness of McIntosh with full-flavored Red Delicious sweetness. It is excellent for fresh eating, in salads, and for use in baking and cooking.
Fuji This big, super-sweet, crisp apple is one of our best sellers. It is great in salads, desserts, and for eating fresh. It keeps longer than most other varieties at room temperature. The characteristic color includes a pink stripe, but high-coloring Fuji strains are now available that are closer to red all over. The Fuji holds its texture when baked. Fujis are harvested in October and can usually be purchased from October to February.
Gala Usually medium to smaller in size with a distinctive pinkish-red stripes over a yellow background. Noticeably sweet flavor and aroma are excellent for snacks and salads. Galas have gained much popularity over the past few years. Harvested early beginning in mid-August through September.
Ginger Gold The fruit is golden yellow, medium to large size, smooth, sweet and only mildly tart. The flesh is white to creamy, with good storage life for an early season picking apple. Great for salads or slices, won't discolor when sliced. Great for baking and cooking, will hold its shape when cooked.
Golden Delicious This apple has a firm white flesh and it retains its shape and flavor when baked or cooked. This is one of the best grown varieties in North Carolina. Because of our climate this apple gets extremely tasty here. This apple is hard to beat when eaten right off the tree. Although, many people prefer tart apples such as Granny Smith, Stayman, and Macintosh for cooking, we prefer this apple because you don't have to use as much sugar in your recipes. This apple is our choice for cooking, eating, drying, and making fried apple pies. Golden Delicious is harvested here from mid-September to October.
Goldrush This apple has a unique spicy rich flavor with a firm texture. This apple holds up very well in storage.
Granny Smith Green, extremely tart, crisp, juicy and versatile, they’re available year-round. Grannies are a favorite of Washington state pie-bakers. They’re also excellent for snacking and salads. Warm days and cool summer nights ensure crunch and flavor for October harvest.
Honeycrisp This is an exceptionally crisp, sweet and juicy apple. It has a well-balanced flavor. This apple keeps real well The skin of a Honeycrisp is mottled red over a yellow background.
Jonagold This juicy, orange-tinted apple has a tangy-sweet flavor. It is great for fresh eating and for cooking. This apple makes a great apple pie.
Magna Bonum Magna Bonum is medium to sometimes large, this fall apple is regarded as a good dessert apple. It is yellow-covered with light red and striped with darker red, and also has white or russet dots. The fruit is juicy, tender, mildly subacidic, and aromatic. The variety was recorded in 1854.
Mutsu This apple is juicy with a moderately sweet flavor. It is light green to yellowish white in appearance with a white firm flesh. This apple is crunchier and tarter than Golden Delicious.
Paula Red This apple is tart and juicy with a crisp white flesh. If you like tart apples you may want to try this one. It is excellent for eating fresh and is also good for applesauce.
Pink Lady Firm, crisp flesh and a unique, tangy-tart, sweet flavor are characteristic of this apple. Great for snack or baking. Pink Lady® is the last apple we harvest usually in early November until mid-December. If you enjoy a slightly tart, crisp apple then come by our apple house to try the Pink Lady®. We usually have Pink Lady apples to sell at our apple house from November to March. This is our most popular apple since the introduction of the gala apple in our area. Watch for a special link here for more information on this apple. We have one of the largest orchard planting of Pink Lady apples in North Carolina. The heart-shaped fruit is bright red and sometimes striped. Firm, crunchy, and sweet flavor makes it excellent for eating fresh as a snack or in salads. This is the world's most widely planted apple and favorite snacking apple.
Rome This apple is great for baking and cooking and yet it is also good for eating fresh. It is a smooth red apple with a slightly juicy flesh. The flavor of this apple really comes out when baked.
Stayman This apple is good for eating fresh and for cooking. It has a firm and crisp flesh and a tart flavor. The skin is deep red against a bit of yellow background. This is one of our most popular apples for cooking. This apple stores well.
Suncrisp This is a crisp, firm yellow apple with a red blush. It has a longer shelf life than the Golden Delicious and does not bruise as easily as the Golden. fIt has a firm texture with much flavor.
